I lived in Savannah for years and years. It's great. Walking around at night is risky TBH. There is a socio-economic aspect to the crime. Always cycle. Don't shop at night. Avoid certain areas. People visit and because it's warm and empty at night, they think it's safe...... there are so many tourists who wander around without fear. Just recently in the market, a tourist area, there was another shooting. It's sad because it's a beautiful town with great people.

The problem with our judicial system is caused by the same problem in all aspects of our lives. Money. I learned first hand just how screwed up our judicial system was back in 2009. I, like most US citizens, believed our judicial system wasn't that bad and that for the most part, it worked. I had never had any issues with the law, other than 2 payable speeding tickets up until 2009. I broke my leg in a motorcycle accident and became addicted to opiates after being prescribed opiates for 9 months post surgery. I ended up stealing $300 from the cash register after my addiction became full blown. I felt terrible and told my boss about it. I was fired obviously. I paid the money back the following week. I went to rehab and have been clean ever since. Two years later, i get pulled over for not wearing a seat belt and discovered i had a felony warrant out for my arrest. I was so confused. I was arrested and went to court the following day. Come to find out, it was over that $300 from two years ago. The owner, not my boss, had made a police report unknowingly that i had already paid the money back two years ago. Also, in that police report, the owner reported that i had stolen $800!! I was put back in a cell and was given another court date a week out and thats when i would find out what my options were. I didn't have any money for a lawyer since i was just a few months out of rehab and getting back on my feet. So, i was given a public defender. I went to court the following week. To my surprise, my boss was in the audience. I didn't know if that was good or bad. I dont know how all courts work, but the particular court i had to attend brought all inmates who had court that day out at one time. They call each inmate up one by one in alphabetical order. I was the third one up. When i went to the podium, shackles around my arms and legs, the judge began to speak. ,"Sir, your charges are theft by deception in the amount of $800. You have absolutely nothing on your record other than a couple of speeding tickets." He continued to tell me what the maximum sentence could be on that charge and a couple of other things. He then began speaking with the State prosecutor and the prosecutor said, "Your Honor, we recommend a five for five deversion and to serve 20 days in jail." My boss stood up in the audience and said, "your honor, we don't want to press charges. He paid this back a long time ago and it wasn't $800, it was $300. The judge said, "It doesn't matter if you want to press charges or not. This is a Commonwealth state and we are pursuing charges." I didnt really understand what that meant except for the 20 days. My public defender immediately looked at me and said, "take that. Thats a sweet deal." So, me not knowing any better, only knowing i could be back out in about three weeks since I've already served a week, agreed to take the deal. They walked me back over to the inmate box and they continued down the roster of inmates. While sitting there listening, two inmates stuck out to me. The first, was an 18 year old female. She was kind of a high profile case in my small Kentucky town. She had been sleeping with this guy, and his girlfriend caught them together while riding a side by side. They ended up running her over and some other stuff that resulted in this girls death. What stood out to me, though, was her offer. I'm sitting there in my seat thinking how this young girl through her life away over jealousy and pettiness. Then, the judge and prosecutor offered her the same thing i was just offered. Literally. Exactly the same thing. The other guy who stood out to me was a 52 year old man who had raped his 5 year old grand daughter. He had previous rape convictions for which he had failed to register and some other stuff. Again, im thinking, "this guy is screwed and should be." Again, judge and prosecutor offer him 1 year in prison and then 5 years probation. A little more stiffer than my offer but not by much. Dumbfounded, as the guard walks me back to my cell, I asked him, "why did those two get such a similar offer as me? I stole $300. What i did was wrong but how is that remotely lose to murder or rape!?" He dead ass looked me in the eyes and said, "thats the difference between having a paid lawyer and a public defender." I lost all faith for our judicial system that day.
